Which throw blanket size do you need: 30x40, 50x60, or 60x80

Pick 30 by 40 for a lap, 50 by 60 for one person on a couch, and 60 by 80 for a bed or two people. All three sizes carry the same print, scaled to the blanket, so the choice is about where the blanket will live, not about the art.

30 by 40 inches: the lap size

This is a little larger than a bath towel. It covers a lap and knees on a chair, fits a stroller or a car seat, and packs into a tote. It is the size to pick for an office chair, a reading nook, or a gift for someone who already owns big blankets. The print is fully visible but reads as a small patch; on the Caribbean signpost and Paradise Found designs, which are printed small on every size, the 30 by 40 keeps the art most in proportion.

50 by 60 inches: the couch size

This is the standard American throw. Spread out, it covers an adult from shoulders to shins on a couch, or the foot of a queen bed when folded in half. Most of our customers buying for themselves want this one. On a deep sectional it covers the seat and hangs a little; on a low loveseat it can reach the floor.

60 by 80 inches: the bed size

This matches the top of a twin mattress, which is 38 by 75 inches, with overhang on the sides. It also covers two adults sitting together on a couch, or one adult plus a large dog, which is the use we hear about most on the Best Dog Ever designs. It is the size where the art is largest, so it is the one to choose if the print is the point.

Measure before you choose

  1. Measure the seat depth and width of the couch or chair. A 50 by 60 laid across a 36-inch-deep sectional seat leaves about 12 inches to hang on each side.
  2. Decide how many people will be under it. One person: 50 by 60. Two, or one plus a dog: 60 by 80.
  3. Check the panel position for the design. Centered badges look the same on every size. Summer Vibes sits near the top edge, so it shows when the blanket is folded over a couch back.

What the size does not change

  • The fabric. Every size is the same polyester velveteen, about 300 gsm per the print partner.
  • The print method. Dye-sublimation on one side, plain white on the back.
  • The care. Cold wash, low tumble dry, no bleach, no iron.

Tolerances

Sewn goods vary by about 1 inch either way, and the first cold wash can shrink the blanket by up to 3 percent. If a measurement matters to the inch, size up.
